The Royal Wedding: William & Kate

I didn't think I was going to do it but I did. I woke up for the 6:00AM wedding of William and Catherine.

They are intriguing. From the story of the commoner catching the prince's eye to the way they are, apart from him being a royal, a regular modern-day couple in love. Their insistence on doing the wedding their way while treating tradition with respect is refreshing and gives hope that when they reign it will be a kingdom that represents both tradition and modern rulings.

Yesterday, joined by Harry, William made an impromptu visit to the crowds to thank them for coming outside the palace the day before the wedding. Wow.
(Can't see the link? Click "impromptu visit" to see the princes visit the crowds)

I wonder about the huge expense of the wedding. Watching CBC News they estimate the wedding to have cost approximately $70 million (Canadian dollars?). Would suppliers not give it for free knowing the publicity and cache would pay a thousand-fold? Who is in charge of this budget and did they negotiate? Those would be interesting questions to have raised by reporters.

I adore the glances and side-talk between William and Kate. The smirks and obvious adoration between the two is endearing.

The vibe from Pippa and Harry is interesting also. Based on their bios (click their names to be linked to one) they seem to have the same personalities. It would be a scream if they hooked up but perhaps too perfect at the same time. No, I don't think it would work after-all.

When we first saw Kate in her dress I must admit I was relieved she didn't do a Diana-style dress with an incredible 25 foot train. It would have been too over-the-top and I would have been put-off. The girl has an eye for style (or her stylists do) and she hit it bang on with only a 9 foot train. It will also be nice to get rid of the strapless style and have sleeves and caps come back into the wedding dress style.

When Wills (supposedly) told her "I love you. You look beautiful" when she first came to the altar, putting on her ring stuck a little, and the apparent joke to his future father-in-law that "I thought we were just having a small wedding" I fell more in love with the couple.

I don't know why but I find the couple are hard not to watch. Is it because of the hype, that they are royal, that they are a good-looking couple, or that they are around my age and stage of life that interests me? Their kisses (yes, we got two!) on the balcony and giggles afterwards was perfect!

I am thoroughly enjoying the coverage and am thrilled that I was able to wake up to watch the ceremony and carriage ride to the palace live.

Three Cups of Tea

I don't recall exactly where I got the idea to read this book but, although it is taking me a while to sift through it, I really am enjoying the message.

Greg Mortenson is a mountain climber and while descending K2 in Pakistan he stumbles into an isolated village, falls in love with its people, and promises himself and the village leader that he will return to build them a school. One thing leads to another and, as time moves on, we learn of his home life in America (marriage, children, nursing career, etc.) and his life in Pakistan developing and supporting it's people through building schools and other initiatives that contribute to independence and a more stable financial future for those in isolated and impoverished villages.

Three Cups of Tea inspires one to assist others as their successes, enthusiasm, increased quality of life, personal growth and financial independence are the only rewards required.

Crochet Baby Chicks in Egg Shells

Isn't this the most adorable project you've ever seen? Thanks to Red Hot Fibers you can get the pattern for free.

I've been working on some for a friend but they keep disappearing as my little ones play with them. Guess we're getting a set, too!

Stomach Flu

There are pros and cons when you have a stomach flu.

Cons: feel gross, can't move or you'll be nauseous or throw up, no energy, can't play with the kids.

Pros: catch up on sleep, lose weight, a good excuse to do nothing.

Of course, these don't all apply when your children are sick too. Thankfully, I got sick while visiting my parents so they took over caring for them while I slept the weekend away. Not the best visit for them and me but they love the kids and the kids love being with their grandparents. Hubby is at a volleyball tournament. I don't think he's completely ammune, however, as he was complaining of a blinding headache last night.

Thanks to my parents for letting me sleep most of this flu off before I have to drive home in time for work tomorrow. Driving in a thunderstorm may take more energy than I have so I'm being sure to rest up as much as possible right now. I could always call in sick for tomorrow if I can't make it but I do like my own bed best.

Crochet Poncho

I am making this adorable Easy Crochet Poncho for Ava. I had about half of one panel done when I realised that I had made it more "yellow" than blue. I felt a little ill when I had to frog (rippit rippit) what I had done and not for an error in crocheting but in changing the colour order.

These are the colours I am using to be similar to the blue version. I couldn't find the exact brand and colours of the yarn in the pattern (blue, yellow, green).

When I first started to make it I had used the blue where the yellow was, not realising how it would look in the pattern. Therefore, there was not enough blue for Ava's liking.
