Spring Cleaning 2010

Is it time to spring clean again? Already? Didn't I just DO this? Last year I had a fabulous time and joined Organized Junkie's Spring Cleaning Party. Here is how I did last year with some before and after photos, too ... Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, Day 5, Day 6. Ha! I am a few months early this year (I did it in April & May 2009). That's why I feel like it's so early!

This year I think I am going to go through each room and give it a thorough clean and purge. I'll start at the top and front room of the house and each day go through a room. This should make it pleasant and swift - I hope. Therefore, the first room I will start in is the master bathroom. Hairballs here I come! When to start it is the next question.

What's first on your spring cleaning list?

Craft & Tell

I've been busy creating this week. I want to share these creations with the following ... Sew & Tell Fridays with amylouwho, Get Inspired! with So Dang Cute, and Super Crafty Saturdays with One Crafty Mommy. Go check them out to see what others have created this week, too (but not after reading my creations, of course).

I finished crocheting this adorable vest for Travis this week (it's a little big because I want him to be able to wear it in the Fall as well). He kept running away from so these are the best shots I could get. I got this pattern from "Candy tots : unique crochet for babies & toddlers" by Candi Jensen. She has a lot of adorable patterns in her book. Unfortunately they only go up to size 3 so if I need to do the dress I'm eyeing for my daughter, I'll have to use larger needles or measure as I go. Not impossible but it will make me think more.
~~~
Here is a race car track that I made for the kids. It's a lot bigger than the original car cozy tutorial I found at Homemade by Jill. Find my tutorial here.
This is the project all folded up.
Here is a close up of the pattern on the outside - I thought these trucks were so adorable. AND they get special close up love because I thought it was on sale and instead it cost me $20 just for that piece!
Here is my daughter holding it up. The numbers on the bottom are pockets to hold or park the cars in. There is so much space because I'm in the process of creating felt cars, a school, and perhaps a pond to make it fun for them to play with.
 Oh, and when it isn't used as a car track or picnic blanket, one can swaddle themselves in it and make a cape or a toga. Yep, that's versatility at it's most creative.
Project Ava ~ Must Sleep By Herself
A bit of history on our night-time ordeals... the kid is 4 years old and still crawls into bed with us before midnight. We only have a queen sized bed and it gets small fast - especially as she is getting bigger and even more of a bed hog than when she was little! Ava's sleep (or lack of) has been an ongoing issue since she was a baby. When she was 2 years old I wrote a post about deciding to give in and that it was nice snuggle time to get her to sleep. She was in her own bed all night.A few months later I wrote here about my hopes that by kindergarten she would be more independent. She starts this September.
So, keeping with this timing goal my husband and I both decided that we need to at least get her out of our bed and into her own - whether one of us joins her throughout the night is another story but we will go to her and get her out of the habit of getting into bed with us. Do you know how creepy it is to think you are snuggling with your husband and then realise it's your kid's foot?! We don't even feel her get in the bed ... she's that good.
Okay, so back to how we are going to achieve our goal to get her out. We agreed to her having a sticker chart where she has to do three things each night that include:
  • Fall asleep in her bed (we're going to work up to laying there 5 minutes on her own before she falls asleep because she uses us as a prop)
  • Stay in her bed all night
  • Wake up happy
My husband felt that she's the kind of kid that would need immediate recognition to look forward to when she woke up to make it stick so, when she gets all three stickers she gets to go with Daddy to the Dollar Store and choose a prize.
How did the first night go? We implemented it on Tuesday night. We talked about each of the three steps and got her buy-in and her excitement. She did it like a dream. She got to put 15 stickers on her chart - I didn't care because she was so darned pleased with herself. We couldn't go that night for the prize so we're planning it later in the week. On Wednesday night when I was trying to get her to fall asleep in her bed instead of the couch I used the "if you don't go in your bed you won't get all 3 stickers. That means no prize". Do you know what the smart-ass said to me? "That's okay, I'm getting a prize because I got all my stickers last night." How do you respond to that?! Do you see what I'm up against? Is it possible to start reproducing a less intelligent next generation? It's downright embarrassing sitting there opening and closing my mouth like a goldfish in response.
"Watermelon" by Marian Keyes
I'm reading "Watermelon" by Marian Keyes as part of the Busy Moms Who Love To Read's  March book selection. This is the first novel I have read with this group but so far it isn't too bad. I'm not too impressed that the protagonist got left by her husband the day she gave birth but I'm getting through the novel and keeping an open mind. Specific questions for us to consider (and my answers):
  1. On a scale of 1 (lamer than lame) and 5(super fantastic) rate the following:
    • Style of Writing  4 (it's fairly clear and easy to follow though some of the Irish terms I am not familiar with)
    • Development of Characters  3
    • Flow of storyline  3
    • Over all book  3.5
  2. Did you enjoy the full range of emotions that Claire encounters?  I am only half-way through but the emotions are definitely realistic so far.
  3. What was your most favorite part?
  4. What was your least favorite part?  Her husband leaving her the day she delivered the baby (this isn't a spoiler - it's the crux of the story)
  5. What did you "not see coming"?  Her loss of all the baby weight in 6-weeks. Wow!
  6. Many have said that this is Marian Keyes' weakest novel - have you read any of the others? What do you think?  I haven't read any of her other novels.
  7. Will you read any more of Keyes' books?  I'm undecided but I will definitely look them up and see what they are about.
Green Thumb?
The Green Thumb. Do I have one? Yep! It's attached to my husband though. He doesn't mind the grunt work of digging and weeding and planting from seed in our basement and then transferring them and then watching the rabbits and other animals eat them all to the root.
I think that there are a few too many rocks and mouse-house potential areas in our yard so I'm hoping to sod over some of it and tidy it up ... especially with some trees in the yard that need to come down, a fence to go up and a multitude of curious and wandering toddlers to supervise in the summer.
I am more of a Farmville gardener myself. Ha ha.
Do you have a green thumb? What are your garden or yard ambitions this year?
I'm A Mommy Blogger And Proud Of It!
I really wanted to attend the Baltimore Bloggy Boot Camp on March 6, 2010 but travel expenses were too hight to justify it right now. Apparently there was a reporter in attendance who came out with an article "Honey, Don't Bother Mommy. I'm Too Busy Building My Brand". Mama Kat wrote about it here, which is where I first heard of the article.
As I think about someone judging mommy bloggers for creative freedom, it really bothers me. Who is this reporter? She works and writes for a living - heaven help her if she has or plans on having children and write at the same time ... the gods will be damning her to hell if that is the case (or at least mommy bloggers will be!).
How dare one person tell another they cannot have a creative outlet or build a social network of supportive, understanding women finding themselves in often isolated situations. The isolation and poop and not eating what we cook and lack of appreciation are what makes psychos! Writing about it is therapy!
We mommy bloggers are the self-aware of our bunch who can see that feeding our soul will lend our family a mentally and emotionally balanced mommy. I blog after the kids nap or go to bed for the night. I also craft. Gosh! I must be the mom from hell!
I've said my piece and am going to hug my kids and read them a book now. Oh, wait! I'm writing this while they are asleep for afternoon nap time.
Emergency Preparedness Kits
I was just reading The Creative Homemaker and her blog post about 72 Hour Emergency Preparedness Kits. I realised that I have had this on the "to do list" for too long. What-with the crazy weather and unexpected natural disasters the world is experiencing, nobody is safe. I am fortunate to live an area that does not regularly experience natural emergencies, however, perhaps this is even more reason to get something in place for if there were an emergency. I shudder to think of the hysteria.
So ... what to do to get myself set up. Letti at Happily Ever After commented that she made her 72 hour kits for family night. She marked on the calendar 6 months from now so that she can replenish the food again. She also made a kit for my car which included a first aid kit, blankets, food, a case of water, toilet paper, plastic trash bags, shampoo, sharpie, can opener, diapers, wipes and a few other things. She also suggests you have feminine products on hand. They could not only be used for feminine needs but I hear they are fabulous bandaids for large gashes.
Are you prepared? What list of contents do you or would you recommend including in a 72 hour kit for a family of four?
Picky Eaters
Question of the day: Are any of your family members picky eaters? What affect does it have on you planning meals?
I've moved to the monthly menu plan (see March's menu plan here) for this very reason. The darned kids have some serious eating issues. One day minute they love it and the next they are repulsed by it. It isn't just my kids either ... the day care kids are getting in on it too now! I am no short order cook so I'm cooking dinner and then they can have it for lunch the next day (toddler-ized with appropriate top-ups of fruit or veggies, yogurt or cheese, and bread). Having the monthly menu also let's me be more flexible on days when I KNOW they aren't going to even consider a lovingly prepared meal and they would prefer a box of macaroni and cheese. Gotta love toddlers.
Post It Note Tuesdays ~ March 2
Go post your Post It Note Tuesday's here. It's SO freeing!
Coke & Pepsi Free Zone
I loved my Coke Zero and Pepsi Max. For the past two weeks I stopped drinking it and last night at dinner I went to have some and after a sip it was too sweet and didn't taste good to me at all. I gave it to hubby and opted for my water. I'm so impressed with myself.
